The Season 2 finale of “This Is Us” is going to the chapel, and Toby (Chris Sullivan) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) are getting married. Yes, the episode, appropriately titled “The Wedding,” will end in a marriage — Susan Kelechi Watson tells TheWrap there will be nothing but “happy tears” for Katoby fans Tuesday night.
But that got us wondering about some other Pearson Family nuptials. Namely, the magical day when Watson’s Beth and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) tied the knot. And while the actress says the latest installment doesn’t dive into that particular story, she can’t wait for a flashback.
“Ya, I would love that!” Watson said. “I think that would be so cool. I think one of the periods of time with Beth and Randall that I’m actually most curious about is when they were engaged and how they got engaged. So there is definitely a curiosity there. I know we’ve peeked now into the future with Randall and Tess and all that, so that opening is there now to explore the future. But I think it would be really cool to go back and see what their wedding was like. I wanna see what that dress was like! That dress is probably really awesome.”
But when it comes to what Beth and Randall are dealing with in the present, well tonight’s episode is all about Deja (Lyric Ross) for them. As fans will remember, last week’s sob fest ended with Deja’s biological mother leaving her for Beth and Randall to raise — without so much as a goodbye.
“Well that part of it is sort of the after journey of what happens just the moment later,” Watson said. “Where we pick up now is gonna be closer to the wedding. So there is an aftermath there we still have to deal with. And there is a state of uncertainty now, like what’s going to happen next? Is there going to be the possibility of adoption? What’s the next process? And also, how do we manage how Deja is dealing with this and still make sure that we treat her like family. We don’t treat her with kid gloves. There is going to be a lot of us trying to figure that out, humorously and also very seriously. That’s where it’s going to pick up.”
And we’re going to follow with a box of tissues.
The Season 2 finale of “This Is Us” airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. on NBC.
